Why I traveled to Russia
Russia has always fascinated me because of the breadth of the country's history. Growing up at the end of the Soviet Era, I didn't experience the Cold War hysteria and instead heard the story of the Romanov dynasty, it's tragic end and the monumental titans of the family like Peter the Great and Catherine the Great. With that as my starting point, I formed a different opposing view of Russia not dominated by politics and became obsessed with learning about it and hoping one day to travel to my historical "promised land." Traveling there opened my eyes to a new world in macro and micro terminology, giving me the context for my non-political view of the country.
